Musique Concrète = music composed of fragments of recorded sounds separated from their origin and manipulated
NATUREXMACHINE is an interactive musique concrète made using sounds from nature and its machinery. Its simple interface and exploratory environment welcome the user to click and drag around the screen to experience the resulting piece. I designed two compositions using natural and mechanical sounds that crossfade between one another in relation to the location of the cursor.
From Nature:
From Machinery:
Birds singing
Birds flapping
Waves crashing
Water splashing
Waterdrops
Owl hooting
Rolling thunder strikes
Wind
Rain falling on leaves
Gas stove
Keyboard typing
Heart monitor beeping
Camera shutter
Car alarm
Printer
Train signal
Windshield wiper
Clock ticking
Air conditioning
The music was composed in Adobe Audition and the interactions were coded in glitch.com
NATUREXMACHINE is inspired by the constant sounds of nature and machinery within our surroundings. The piece creates an environment where the two seemingly opposing sound sources come together and become a musically pleasant experience for the listener.
As a musique concrète, it ties to the broader field of work, sampling — a modern-day music technique incorporated in nearly all songs today that reuses and manipulates a portion of a sound recording into another recording.
